Uganda – Bobi Wine Released on bail

Ugandan Rapper and opposition Member of Parlianment Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine has been released on bail. He was released on Thursday after spending three days in a maximum security prison in KampalaBobi Wine was arrested on Monday for allegedly staging an illegal protest in 2018.

During the bail hearing, Magistrate Esther Nahirya ordered Bobi Wine to pay one million shillings bail in cash and each of the three sureties to pay shs10 million non cash before his release.

“You are not allowed to engage in any unlawful demonstrations and if you breach this condition, the bail will be cancelled,”the magistrate said
adjourned the case to May 23, 2019.

During the bail hearing Bobi Wine told the court packed with supporters that he would remain in prison if it meant “standing for what is right”. He added that “It is not we on trial, but the court. My business is the truth,” and “If standing for what is right is going to keep me in prison, then be it so.” His supporters celebrated his release in the streets of Kampala

Regarding his arrest, Asuman Basalirwa, one of Wine’s lawyers, told AFP that “This is a journey Hon. Kyagulanyi (Wine) started on, and he is aware of the dangers he faces daily,” .

Bobi has emerged a real challenger to the veteran President Yuweri Museveni who plans to seek a sixth term of office in the next presidential elections. Bobi Wine enjoys the support of most young Ugandans and Africans in general and is regarded as one of the new faces of change in Africa from the old guards.
