Kenya’s High Court on Friday upheld the country’s laws that criminalize gay sex. The ban on gay sex was in Kenya like in many formal British colonies and trusted territories was imposed by Britain during the colonial era.
The decision to uphold the ban was a unanimous ruling by a three-judge panel of the court.
Gay rights advocates in Kenya have decried the ruling as discriminatory and vow to keep fighting until the law is overturned. Eric Gitari, a Kenyan gay rights activities call the ruling “A sad day for the rule of law and human rights,”. His voice has been echoed by many activists across the world especially on social media.
More than 70 countries criminalize gay sex, most of them Muslim countries or former British colonies, according to advocacy groups.
